The opening ceremony for the TWAS 2003 Beijing meetings (including TWAS 9th General Conference & 20th Anniversary Celebrations, TWAS 14th General Meeting, and TWNSO 8th General Assembly) was held at the Great Hall of the People at 4:00 pm  Oct. 16 in Beijing.

    Chinese President Hu Jintao was present at the event and delivered a speech. Hu praised the TWAS for its contributions to the science and technology development in the world. "China has always attached great importance to S&T exchanges and cooperation with other countries and regions in the world. Fruitful achievements have been recorded in S&T cooperation with a large number of developing countries through various forms and levels," he noted. China will continue to its efforts in this regard, he added. President Hu also presented TWAS prizes to recipients at the ceremony.

    On behalf the local organizing committee of the TWAS meetings, CAS President Lu Yongxiang made a welcome speech at the ceremony. He said the convening of the TWAS and TWNSO conferences in China was a great inspiration to the entire Chinese science community. "We feel it is a great honor to host the 14th General Meeting of TWAS as well as the 8th General Assembly of TWNSO."

    Other people speaking at the meeting included TWAS President C. N. R Rao, the representatives of the Italian Government and  Sida-SAREC, president of the International Council for Science (ICSU), co-chair of the InterAcademy Panel on International Issues (IAP) and minister of Science and Technology of China.

    Earlier that afternoon, Samuel C. Ting, Nobelist in Physics in 1976, was invited to address the participants. The title of Prof. Ting's lecture was In Search of the Fundamental Building Block of the Nature.
